The Practice of Contact

2025-2026

(photographic project: my father’s archival family photos and my own film photographs taken with his FED-2 camera)

My father was fifteen when he started shooting with his first FED camera. He photographed everything that made up his life—family, friends, and the details of daily existence—capturing the unique fabric of the everyday. After he passed away, I inherited his archive of photographs and that old camera. Holding it in my hands, I felt the weight of the life he had lived. Now, sixty years later, I press the shutter release on his camera, following in his footsteps.

Memory does not freeze time; rather, it pieces together its fragments. I feel this physically now: as I look through the same viewfinder, my father’s gaze from the past meets my own, which is searching for the present. Memory creates islands of meaning in the river of time.

With my father’s photographs came a clear realization: I am a link in this chain. And it is up to me to decide how long the thread will become.
